W15. What is the future of Wikipedia? Will it exist in 20 years? 50? 100? Kim Byung Chan
1. Summary
Wikipedia is being updated 24 hours a day through collective intelligence. So the contents of Wikipedia are more empathy and reality than other encyclopedias. But when I think of it, this is a problem of Wikipedia. Wikipedia has only content updates. Since the smartphone revolution, its power has been tremendously strong, so many Internet sites are providing interfaces for smartphones. But Wikipedia is not. It is an inconvenient interface to use in smartphones. In order to use Wikipedia easily, it is better to access via laptop or desktop.
Wikipedia's methods and information do not let them easily disappear. The information is still used by many people. However, the development of the Internet will increase access to information more and more to public. I do not know when people around the world will have easy access to the Internet, but I think use of Wikipedia will gradually decline if a new revolution does not happen in Wikipedia.
Wikipedia, as I said above, is a collective intelligence that everyone can use. People can easily add, modify, and remove information. If the work they perform during this process is not fact based, or unreliable, the credibility of Wikipedia will decline. But Wikipedia lacks the means to control it. Unless we discuss this method, Wikipedia can be eliminated sooner than we think. Of course, if they solve the above problems, and if they solve new problems in the future, i think that Wikipedia will exist constantly.
2. Interesting Point
Wikipedia has only been around for about 15 years. During this period, however, Wikipedia has made tremendous progress in terms of content. I think that ordinary people like me would have helped wikipedia (especially in terms of information) to make this development. But ordinary people can not give complete credibility to their information. Of course, the benevolent dictator may have filtered the information so far, but the benevolent dictator would not have made the information on Wikipedia completely trustworthy. Nonetheless, it is strange that there are few problems with reliability in Wikipedia.
3. Discussing
Wikipedia is used by many people around the world. It can be used by ordinary students like me, but it is also available to a huge technician or specialist in the field. I think Wikipedia has a problem with the interface. At this time, can not Wikipedia get techs to solve their interface? If so, in what way?
