W5. Can we trust Wikipedia? - Seron Kim
Wikipedia is a large site used by people all over the world. People get information through Wikipedia and edit article directly when needed. Through the action of collective intelligence, Wikipedia is becoming more and more developed and growing. Can we trust Wikipedia? I think "We can trust Wikipedia but we should not trust it unconditionally.“
Obviously Wikipedia is reliable. Wikipedia itself has an implicit framework for editing, and people follow it and use it. It is also possible to increase the trust of the article by leaving a source for the information, and to delete the edited information through a predetermined process. So there will be more and more reliable information in Wikipedia.
But you should not trust Wikipedia unconditionally. Because there may be misinformation in Wikipedia. Of course, there is a high possibility that it will be fixed through the deletion function of Wikipedia and the collective intelligence of people. But it will be a problem if information that is not shared is shared and spread to people. Therefore, So it would be necessary to voluntarily censor or verify Wikipedia's information.
I also think that we can trust Wikipedia but not always. Sometimes uncorrect information are contained in the article. If a person know some information is not accurate, he or she can correct the information by editing. But how can we recognize and correct a wrong information when many people including us believe that is a correct and true? That is why we need to take a critical attitude of the article or argument.
ReplyDeleteI read your article well. I also agree with you. Wikipedia's information can not always be right. But I'm a little different from what you think. Wikipedia has the ability to continually modify information. I think this is a reliable function. That's why I suspect Wikipedia has stood the test. I agree with you in many ways, but I would love to be more confident about Wikipedia's features.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your sentence "We can trust Wikipedia but we should not trust it unconditionally." But I think that it is not always good or not always a solution to censor Wikipedia's information.
