W15. What is the future of Wikipedia? Will it exist in 20 years? 50? 100? - Yeonju Heo
When writing a post on W.13, I thought that Wikipedia would not disappear. To write this post, I read my last post. There was one comment. The comment was that more innovative and new sites in the future could replace Wikipedia. I agree with that to some extent. People are easier and more accessible to new sites. But I can not be sure when it will happen. And that does not mean that Wikipedia will disappear. Wikipedia has a vast amount of data. The new site may be a more innovative Wikipedia. Writing articles is easier, at a glance, and can be a newer form of Wikipedia. Because creating a new platform and gathering new information is costly.
Even if there are a whole new site to replace Wikipedia, Wikipedia will not disappear. If there are new and innovative sites, people will use them more. But Wikipedia will remain like an encyclopedia still exists. Users will shrink and lose vigor, but Wikipedia will be 'in existence'. No one will be able to easily remove that much amount of dedication and resources. Maybe Wikipedia can be the source of new and innovative sites. In the 'References' section of the new site, we may find the name of Wikipedia.
Wikipedia made with the dedication of many people will not easily disappear. People will make more efforts to prevent Wikipedia from disappearing, and will create new innovations. In fact, it is very difficult and foolish to declare the future. But I want to assert that Wikipedia will exist even after 100 years. Because it is my hope. I hope that the contribution and commitment of everyone who uses Wikipedia will remain as long as possible.
I also think that Wikipedia would not disappear in 20 years and that Wikipedia will not disappear even if there are a whole new site to replace Wikipedia. I agreed that Wikipedia will remain like an encyclopedia still exists. But I think Wikipedia could disappear in 50 or 100 years. In the future People still want to do create somethings and work together consistently for collective intelligence. But, with technology advancing at a fast-growing rate, if the AI technology develops more, then Wikipedia may not be necessary. The AI can replace the activities of humans in the far future. What do you think about this?
ReplyDeleteI think AI's knowledge may consist of articles from Wikipedia. AI can not exist by itself. People must enter information to make an AI. Therefore, knowledge of Wikipedia can be used to create AI. If so, the site of Wikipedia might be gone in the distant future, but the knowledge of Wikipedia can remain.
DeleteI also think that AI can serve Wikipedia. They will be able to gather data from the Internet and organize it appropriately into Wikipedia. If it does, Wikipedia will be a huge universe of information without before.
I also encourage Wikipedia to continue 100 years from now. So far, editors in Wikipedia will try to make a new article. I think such efforts will lead to future. This will help Wikipedia to be adapted in the future.
