W4. Discuss Reagle's Chapters 1-2 Tae Joon YOO
his article tells about the origin of Wikipedia, the people who influenced wikipedia’s birth and the spirits that affected it. I ve been using Wikipedia for long time and I think it was useful to know the background of Wikipedia, instead of just using it lightly.
Wikipedia is not just a multilingual encyclopedia. If the encyclopedia can be compared to a library, Wikipedia could be compared to the ancient Greek colonist or place of discussion, “the salon”. This is because Wikipedia's information is always revised and updated. Wikipedia has a vision for creating a world where all humans are free to share all their knowledge. The Wikipedia spirit can be traced back to the idea of the " brain of the world. " The man named Wells believed that everyone should have access to efficiently stored knowledge. I saw that the storage of information needed to be done well and that there would be a large encyclopedia in one language. It also saw that information should be accepted accurately and critically, no superstition, no false information, and a " neutral stance, " which is analogous to Wikipedia's spirit. If Wells ' " The World's Brain " resembled Wikipedia's spirit. Otlet's taxonomy is similar to the way Wikipedia is currently categorized with the Internet. We created categories by adding index usage and symbols to the system at Outlet's Judith Base, which is similar to the modern information taxonomy. Vision and technology for information such as Otlet and Wells helped develop current information storage technologies, and in addition to that, they are a precursor to the birth of the Web like Wikipedia.
Founded after a series of procedures, Wikipedia has grown incredibly fast. 6. It has become a highly open and free form of interactive encyclopedia although it is not the most ideal form.
Human thirst for information and knowledge is very strong, as history has shown. In that sense, the reason why paper invention is considered important, the importance of the ancient Greek library, and the stone wall of Egypt remain important and not shown to public. Wikipedia plays a very important role in this regard as a repository of modern knowledge. Although the way Wikipedia is created is different from the way it was written by intellectuals in ancient times and in modern times. Modern knowledge is much more than that of the past. And compared to the past, the amount of information a person has access to is incomparably different. Wikipedia is not yet perfect, but it can serve as the ideal type of intellectual repository, and moreover, the world brain.
I also think that in terms of knowledge, Wikipedia can play a role in the global brain. However, it is doubtful whether Wikipedia can play a role in the global brain in various areas. There are a lot of knowledge in the current Wikipedia, but I think it is not enough to make a 'judgment' of the brain's knowledge because it still takes a 'neutral' position on all information.

ReplyDeleteI agree that Wikipedia is an ideal type of intellectual repository and a global brain role. Unlike the past, the quality and quantity of today's information has completely changed. Also, the way in which information and knowledge are refined and written has changed a lot. Wikipedia is best suited for rapidly changing systems. It can be used by anyone without restriction of time and space. In addition, Wikipedia contains most of the information based on objective data.
