W7. Why Free Culture matters? - ChaeHyeon Lee

Why Free Culture matters? Free culture is related to copyright. If you search for ‘Free Culture in Wikipedia, you can find a free culture movement. The Free Cultural Movement is a social movement that promotes the freedom to distribute and modify creative works using free content on the Internet and other media. The movement opposes excessive copyright laws. Many participants in this movement argue that overly restrictive copyright laws hinder creative activity. Wikipedia is a free, licensed content that anyone can edit, use, modify and distribute.

The organization associated with the Free Culture is the ‘Creative Commons’ founded by Lawrence Lessig. The Creative Commons license (CCL) is a pre-authorization mark of work distributed here If any creator keeps certain conditions for his or her creation, it can be used anytime. Constant conditions may set the terms of use of the work as desired by the creator. The direction that Creative Commons pursues is to create a society where more creative works can be created by freely sharing creativity. It is hoped that there will be more active creative activity in a world where nothing new can be created.

However, the Creative Commons License (CCL) does not mean that the work is free to use. But many people think that the Creative Commons License (CCL) is free. Not everyone is aware that some bloggers or sns users are just using other people's works. This activity allows the copyright owner to publicly mark the terms of use of the work and make it available on condition that the work is used without permission each time they use it. Even though it is a copyrighted work, there is a situation in which it is used arbitrarily because it does not pay money or the copyright owner's sanction does not appear right away. In this regard, I think that the issue of copyright is a big debate. Despite the introduction of the Creative Commons license for user convenience, this is not keeping up well. In addition, copyrighted works that must be paid and used are also circulated and consumed illegally. I think we have to think about the concept of copyright.

  1. Does not that mean that the Creative Commons License (CCL) is free to use? I thought so. So I thought people could bring a photo with the CCL mark to Wikipedia. In fact, I still do not have a concept of copyright. I do not use it because I don't know, and I definitely need to pay attention to copyright issues.
