W4. Discuss Reagle's Chapters 1-2 - Sun bo Sim

1. Summary
In this article, writer tells Wikipedia’s goal, and shows about the studies many people have done to create Wikipedia and its characteristics and meanings.
Wikipedia realizes the historical pursuit of the Universal Encyclopedia, a vision based on a technology that is not perfect and has flaws but is seeking to increase access to information. This article introduces Godwin's law, referring to the anecdote of blocking the account of the white supremacist on Wikipedia. Godwin's Law states that online discussions become more of a personal attack as they progress, while Wikipedia does not. In other words, Godwin's law dictates that while the tendency to think worst is recognized, Wikipedia's culture encourages contributors to treat and think well about others.
The creators of Wikipedia worked together to imagine a world where all humans could freely share all their knowledge, to program and build something valuable. There are still very few perfectly credible articles from Wikipedia that have come up. As a result, Wikipedia has tried to recognize the contributions of its participants by giving the barnstar to encourage its participation.
There are three key policies that are central to Wikipedia's understanding. It is also for Wikipedia's goal - the Universal Encyclopedia - through its policies. They are “Neutral Point Of View, " " No Original Research, " and " Verifiability. "

2. Interesting Point
Interesting Point is an anecdote of a white supremacist and Wikipedia manager. The story goes that a white supremacist was restricted from using Wikipedia, and one manager found out that it was unfair. But then another manager said he had blocked it because he had posted not only a list of Jewish Wikipedia users, but also a law that blocked Wikipedia's control. The reason why I found this anecdote interesting is that I think it can be disputed. The range of articles available on Wikipedia could be related to how far it is accredited.

3. Discussion Point

As I read the anecdote, a curious part came to me. I have learned about the press law recently and there is a part about freedom of speech. I thought the range of articles that could be posted on Wikipedia and the freedom of expression were quite relevant. So it made me wonder if it was legitimate for Wikipedia to have articles about how it could negatively affect a particular person, group, country, etc. I think it is necessary to discuss it with what we did during the class on Wikipedia's censorship.
