W4. Discuss Reagle's Chapters 1-2 Cho jiwon

1.Summary
This article is a description of Wikipedia's "vision" and the technology behind it. Wikipedia is not an online multilingual encyclopedia. Wikipedia is a project based on technology that enhances accessibility to information and is a project that realizes the historical goals of the Universal encyclopedia. The technology that improves this 'information accessibility' goes well with the slogan of the Wikipedia to make it editable by anyone. Wikipedia therefore has a special vision of access and openness.
Wikipedia is Nupedia's wiki-based successor, whose name is a miniature of the online collaboration editing tools "wiki" and "encyclopedia". "As an open content encyclopedia, Nupedia is licensed to read and improve the software sources you use, including proprietary software that may limit your personal use (eg, non-backupable, multiple copy installations, recovery or improvement) Wikipedia has a lot of features that are not shared by all wikis at this time, but each wiki page has a link to the page you're interested in, You will see a link explaining how to display or edit the page on the "Discussions" page. You can also use page history to show all changes to the page (including author, time, and edit summary). These contributions can be attributed to many There are tens of thousands of activists on the wiki, including small communities of hundreds or dozens of geographical, functional, and thematic themes.
The wiki has a culture of collaboration. There are three central policies for understanding this culture. "Neutral view", "No original research", "Verifiable". The neutral view initially seems impossible to objectively neutral knowledge, but it is the opposite. Two other policies of "NO Original Research" and "Verifiability" are about attributes that mean "all material on Wikipedia must be attributed to a trusted and published source." All three are the other side of the same thing, All three aspects must be observed.

Chapter 2 begins with the pursuit of a universal encyclopedia. Co-founders of Wikipedia, Jimmy Wales and the Nupedia pioneer, sent the first message to the Nupedia email list. "One day, this encyclopedia will be available to schools around the world, they need only the printing costs to print this encyclopedia, which can find a certain type of Enlightenment aspirations, It is not perfect for this problem, but we can solve this problem by using a number of technical methods, such as Project Xanadu, Project Gutenberg, Interpedia, Nupedia, and GNUPedia / GNE. At the heart of all technologies is securing "all knowledge" and "sharing with everyone." Of course, not all of these technologies are perfect, so they need the contributions and help of many people. And it is complementing the shortcomings.

2.Interesting point
The most interesting thing about the wiki is that it is related to 'censorship'. If i associate it with the contents of the book, it will be a "neutral perspective "," no original research ", and" verifiability. "In the article, the number of users currently logged in is only 2.5% of logged users. "There are currently 1,675 manager accounts, of which 906 are active." This may not be a huge problem, because the form of the contribution may be different. However, there will be a problem that a few editors can use the information of the post biased. I think this is a weakness of Wikipedia based on collective intelligence. Therefore, it is necessary to increase the importance of censorship more and more.

3.Discussion point
It is a question from the class. The wiki can go up any controversial issues because any controversial issues are information. This rejection of censorship is probably due to the early vision of the wiki. But is this information of value we share? Rather, does not this information lower the quality of the wiki? I would like to discuss this with the students.
