W13. Can Wikipedia disappear? Seon, Yong-il

1. Summary
The future of Wikipedia is not guaranteed. But at least Wikipedia will not disappear voluntarily. In other words, it is not going to be a method where popularity will disappear as number of users decreases. Already, Wikipedia covers things that were not covered in traditional encyclopedias. While one may doubt the accuracy of information, it is not without information. Finding information that has not already been uploaded to Wikipedia has become a difficult task. In our society, all information has value.

2. Interesting
So, does it happen in certain countries that block the domain of Wikipedia's homepage? Of course it won't be easy. It might be interesting compared to Naver, a famous Korean portal site. When Koreans search, they look for Naver first. There is a lot of information because many people are looking for it, and people keep accessing Naver. That is why there have been many opinions about reducing Naver's power. But it was impossible. Because Naver was basically a portal site. Its emphasis is on that anyone can create portal sites such as Naver. In this context, Wikipedia will not be forced to disappear either.

3. Discussion
There is a problem that occurs when a site becomes powerful. It is blind trust of people. They don't look for information from anywhere else, and they believe that only information from their favorite sites is true. This causes an imbalance in online information. This could lead to a situation where the person who controls the portal controls the world. But we don't have the power to stop them. What should we do?

Comments

  1. I read your article very well. I also think that there should not be 'blind trust of people'. I think, 'We can trust Wikipedia, but we need to censor ourselves.'
