W6. How important is it to be civil online on the Internet?-Ji Young An

These days lots of controversial problems are rising. And because of those problems, people fight on the Internet. But I think most of problems happen because of a lack of civic attitudes. As I highlighted the discussion section of Wikipedia last post, talking together with having civic attitudes is very important point.
On the Internet lots of people meet. And this means all of them has different thinking and experiences different cultures. So it is certain that everyone's opinion is different. But I think from this difference, the collective intelligence comes. So I think this difference is very important. But sadly, because of this difference some people fight, just arguing their opinion is one hundred percent right. This attitude is nothing good to our collective intelligence. To develop collective intelligence, people need the civic attitudes. Not just persisting stubbornly they should talk and listen, trying to understand other people. If they talk their opinion or thinking calmly, and listen others' thinking as well, I think they could reach to the new point of view which they couldn't reach if they thought alone.
Also I think civic attitudes is specially important on the Internet. It is because on the Internet, we couldn't see other expression like their voice tone or facial expression. So we should communicate to each other with only by a keyboard. And writing has possibility of misunderstanding. From these reason I think the civic attitudes is very important on the Internet to develop collective intelligence.

  1. I also think civic attitudes are important. When I was discussing with others in Wikipedia, I sometimes feel bad because my opponent seems to be talking aggressively to me. But when I saw it again later, it felt like a plain sentence. If I had spoken badly then I would regret it later. We need to be more careful on the Internet because we communicate only in words.

  2. I agree with your opinion. Since Wikipedia is a community, it is very important for users to have a polite attitude. Rude attitude leads to controversy. Again, the debate hinders cooperation and collaboration among users. That is why there is a rule in Wikipedia.

  3. In collective intelligence like Wikipedia, I also think it is very important to behave politely because Wikipedia is for sharing knowledge and making discussion. On the other part of online such as internet community or game, of course we know being civil is very important thing. But, unfortunately, there are people very rude. Do you think you still have to be civil and kind to these people who attack you without any reason?
