W13. Can Wikipedia disappear? - Ji Young, An

“Can Wikipedia disappear?” I think this topic is very interesting. And my answer to this question is no, as long as people could use the Internet. The main reason is the collective intelligence. Anyone forced to write their knowledge in Wikipedia. Every articles and information is produced by people’s autonomy. There is no perfect answer to the question why people write in Wikipedia without any compensation. But people are still writing in Wikipedia paying their efforts and time. So I think Wikipedia won’t disappear. And another reason why I think like that is the world is keep changing and developing. This means new information must be keep come out. Also the information which could be not available must be there. From this fact I could think that people will continually edit the new information in Wikipedia. But I think the format of Wikipedia could be changed in future. If new technology is developed and became generalization, the format of Wikipedia would be changed from today’s Wikipedia. But I could not easily imagine that format. So to arrange my opinion, I think Wikipedia will not disappear and if it does, it will be by very low percentages. But I think Wikipedia’s format could be changed by the technology. So I am curious about other people’s thinking. If Wikipedia’s format is changed, how would it look like?

  1. I agree with your opinion. Wikipedia is really used by a lot of people, and more posts will be created by many users in the future. People will want to write more and more articles voluntarily and will continue their activities. Such a free culture is already established in Wikipedia. As long as this culture is deeply embedded, Wikipedia will not disappear.
