W13. Can Wikipedia disappear?
1. Summary
Wikipedia is the realization of a long-founded vision of the universal encyclopedia. However, the vision is criticized by critics as Utopia or dangerous distopia. The obscenity of the debate is also raised as a problem, which can be understood based on the history of encyclopedic impulse and base passion. Debating may technically be an incentive to a specific purpose, but it may also result in an unwelcome change to others. Therefore, we must continue to develop the means of " critical judgment. "
2. Interesting Point
For me, having only considered Wikipedia's debate function as a positive aspect, the explanation of the side effects of the discussion was interesting. After reading this sentence, I thought about the function of debate not only in Wikipedia but also in everyday life, and based on my experiences, I realized that it is really hard to judge and pursue discussions as a compelling basis.
3. Discussion
What position should we take to pursue critical judgments and discussions as compelling grounds? In previous postings, we learned the importance of ' respect ' when using Wikipedia. Perhaps this attitude is a very important factor in realizing the positive function of the debate. What can we do to develop this attitude of respect?
In my opinion, Wikipedia users are so obsessed with their sources that it would be possible to respect them if they were a little tolerant of their sources. And if the deletion of other people's edits is not too strictly applied, it may make you feel more respectful.
ReplyDeleteI think we should be able to understand the meaning of 'respect' in cyberspace. Although the development of technology is economical, there are fewer opportunities to meet people in person. Between humans and machines we must not forget about ethics. Also, consideration is important. I think it is more important for us to think again and express our opinion than to say "NO." to other opinions.
