W13. Can Wikipedia disappear?
1. Summary
The destruction of a mighty empire can be seen in history. Also, the reason they are destroyed is that they start with very minor events, rather than a tremendous and important reason. Wikipedia is currently building the largest empire in the world's online encyclopedia. Can this Wikipedia disappear?
Just three or four years ago, there were online encyclopedias on the Korea Internet, not only in Korean Wikipedia, but in quite a variety of Korean. Libre Wiki, League Veda Wiki, Enhai Wiki Mirror, Namu Wiki, and Korean Wikipedia. I will look at the mistakes of the League Veda Wiki, the biggest wave of them, and try to discuss whether Wikipedia can disappear.
2. Interesting Point
The reason why the League Veda wiki was destroyed is trivial reason, but obviously important reason. The beginning was a document on the League Veda wiki, a document about "Neverland," which was brought from an unauthorized translation of the English Wikipedia. Beginning with this incident, it was argued that other documents brought unauthorized documents from both Korean and English Wikipedia, so administrators had their own offline meeting to solve them.
However, after their off-line meeting, administrators said only that the solution to unauthorized translation is "Just Look". And, They also insisted that their sites are in financial deficit and therefore should be advertised on the site. This has made it inevitable to criticize online users for profit, and many have left the League Veda Wiki.
In short, a lack of response to the managers' copyright controversy and attempts to run the site for commercial purposes led to the fall of the League Vedic wiki.
3. Discussion Point
In the previous case, Wikipedia is now quite faithfully managing the copyright, and there is no attempt to run the site for profit. So Wikipedia is not going to be destroyed. However, it is also true that if Wikipedia is neglected in this matter, they can be at risk of perish. What do you think? Do you think that the pursuit of copyright and for-profit, as we have seen before, will be an important factor in leading to the destruction of the site?
