W9. Discuss Reagle's Chapters 3-4 - Sun Bo Sim
1. Summary
Chapter 3 provides more details on the
Neutral point of view and good faith discussed in the previous chapters. The
author mentions the "collaborative culture", a feature that can
explain Wikipedia before dealing with both of these. The author explains that
collaborative work creates a common understanding that was not previously owned
or shared. Collaboration creates shared meaning for a process, product, or
event. For the first of the two Neutral point of view, the author says that the
participant must give up trying to convince others of what is right and wrong
and to focus on expressing what is generally understood about the subject. Good
faith is the assumption that when people see Wikipedia editors, they should
think of what they are trying to do to help Wikipedia. Chapter 4 explains the
characteristics, influences, and processes of openness, which is the essence of
Wikipedia.
2. Interesting Point
I was interested in bachmann's law at the
beginning of chapter 4 and wanted to think about the meaning of the word. “Trolls
are the driving force of Wikipedia. The worst trolls often spur the best
editors into creating a brilliant article with watertight references where
without the trollish escapades we would only have a brief stub.” Troll will
mean people editing in Wikipedia that are either inefficient or maliciously
screwing up their articles. I agree with the fact that the editors of these
people call on more professional people and make the articles brilliant, and I
have come to think about the Troll's ositive function. I think it is an
opportunity to become more and more worthy Wikipedia by rediscovering articles
that are not discovered by professionals as the wrong edits are created.
3. Discussion Point
Discussions on the scope of openness have
been constantly going on, but I think it is something to keep thinking about
because there are no clear answers yet. The main reason for the regulation in Wikipedia
is to prevent the article from being unduly disturbed. I know that there are
some cases where you use bots and block IPs to prevent them. I would like to
add an additional process to the list as well. I think if you get a couple of
warnings that you can perceive that your edits are adversely affecting you,
such as blocking or limiting edits, malicious editing will be reduced.
ReplyDeleteI read your post well. I also think that Wikipedia improves as the wrong edits are rediscovered and fixed by professionals.
