1.Summary
These 3 chapters are about the collaboration of Wikipedia. Collaboration creates shared meaning for a process, product, or event. Therefore, a culture of collaboration within a period means a set of assumptions, values, meanings, and behaviors about cooperation within a community. There are several norms in Wikipedia. First, Wikipedia is free content that anyone can edit. The second Wikipedia has a code of conduct because it works by building consensus. We should respect Wikipedia. The third neutrality must be maintained. The stance of neutrality implies that contributors should abandon efforts to convince others of what is right or true, and instead focus on a neutral presentation of what is commonly understood about that topic. In conclusion, In the case of the English Wikipedia, there is a collaborative culture that asks its participants to assume two postures: a stance of neutral point of view on matters of knowledge, and a stance of good faith toward one’s fellow contributors. Whereas NPOV renders the subject matter of a collaborative encyclopedia compatible, good faith makes it possible to work together. Therefore, a culture of assuming the best of others, and demonstrating patience, civility, and humor facilitates collaborating with one’s peers, of varied persuasions, to fit the pieces together.
This 4 chapter is about the openness of Wikipedia. A central aspiration in the pursuit of a universal encyclopedia is increased access to information. Wikipedia community members do share common practices and norms; as we’ve seen, they share a collaborative culture. More specifically, an open content community is characterized by. Transparency is that makes its processes, rules, determinations, and their rationales available. Integrity is that ensures the integrity of the processes and the participants’ contributions. Nondiscrimination is that prohibits arbitrary discrimination against persons, groups, or characteristics not relevant to the community’s scope of activity. Noninterference is the linchpin of openness. In conclusion, Wikipedia is an example of an open content community. It can be difficult to balance the associated values of transparency, integrity, and nondiscrimination, as well as other concerns such as free speech and the safety of people and the project itself. Furthermore, boundaries are a fundamental feature of any community, even for those that aspire to openness because it is rarely a simple binary of open or closed. Even a theoretically perfect openness can lead to behavior and informal structures that are less than inclusive.
