W9. Discuss Reagle's Chapters 3-4 Yun-Jin Kim

1. Summary
In chapter 3 is telling about how important collaborative culture is and chapter 4 is talking about open content community.
People discuss and talk together and make a knowledge and these results are opened to anyone who access Wikipedia. And anyone also edit and collaborate. These two important specifics that Wikipedia has. Especially English Wikipedia.

2. Interesting point and discussion.
I thought a word ‘collaborate’, working together within a community, seem like positive meaning. But in chapter 3, it says collaborate also mean argument and conflict. I was confused first time but second time I agreed what the author said but later I was confused again. Well.. this is interesting, but I think this might be depends on how situation goes on. If conflict left no other special or meaningful thing, this is a ‘Conflict’. But if it left meaningful and thoughtful things, this might be called ‘Collaboration.’ Conflict and Collaborate are has different color. I think the author just saw a one color.

3. Discussion point
The author only talked about Collaborative culture but I would like to say that the people who edit are less than people who just see Wikipedia. Only few of users edit on Wikipedia. This mean that collaboration is not enough than normal society. I want to ask author about ‘Is the collaboration enough that can cover our society?’

Comments

  1. I think your discussion question is interesting. Unfortunately our society in general is really selfish now, that's why many people don't collaborate. We can consider these people as free riders, they use the system without participating. From my point of view, it is not an issue, just a basic reflex of human being.
