W6. How important is it to be civil online on the Internet? – Clément Chevallier

Summary

Today, everybody can freely express their feelings and their disagreements with social networks. Everybody can ask questions and discuss thanks to forums. Now, Internet is a place of creation, of expression, of interaction, of gathering. It is more than a simple virtual place, it became a new society. And like a real society, there are some rules that people must respect. Indeed, when you register on most websites, you have to accept some conditions, including rules that you must respect (you must be polite, respect the other users, no personal attacks, rudeness or aggressive behaviors …). For example, contributors on Wikipedia must treat others with respect because Wikipedia demands civility.

Interesting point

But sometimes, because of the anonymity, some people don’t respect these rules and publish aggressive or inappropriate contents. Twitter is the best example. In addition, the moderation is often judged very slow or light. I think it is a real thorny issue. Because the freedom of expression is paramount. Normally, some laws exist in different countries to punish these behaviors and protect against defamation, insult, incitement to discrimination, hatred or violence against a person. But in fact, it is often difficult to apply on the Internet.

Discussion

Many people demand the end of anonymity on Internet. Is it the best way to guarantee a civil online behavior?
