W6. How important is it to be civil online on the Internet? Boeun Kim
Opinion:
If you start to imagine what happens if we didn’t, absolutely you will agree on it is important. To be civil on the Internet is important as well as to be polite while meeting offline. Most of people whom we contact online are a stranger, but we don’t mock or be rude to her/him. However, when people are on online, they often do. Why people become more brave and sometime be rude?
I think maybe the ‘anonymity’ encourage people to speak drastically. We could remind that how many accidents have been happened by internet anonymity. Many malicious comments are driven by having anonymity. Largely rude speech come out from anonymous online community. Of course, the anonymity can make people’s speech free but it is not guarantee we have right to talk carelessly. So I think we have to care on Internet when we want to communicate with other people.
Discussion:
I’m interested in ‘mirroring.’ I think it is very controversial issue lately. It is long way from ‘be civil’, but it draws much of heated discussion. On the one hand, it has meaning of making people feel how many female in Korea are exposed to verbal violence on the internet. On the other hand, it just encourage people grow hatred to each gender. I want to know how do you think about this phenomenon.
