W6. How important is it to be civil online on the Internet? posted by Sojeong Yeon
The reason why it is important to be civil online is similar to why you should be civil offline. Imagine a situation in a public place. What if the subway gets crowded with uncivilized people? What happens if everyone behaves the way they want without being concessive or considerate, without self-control? Extremely melee may occur. So how important is it to be citizens online who have good manners?
In short, people with courtesy have open minded attitude and do not insist on self-assertion. They can listen to the story of the other party and respect the opinion of others. First, if users keep courteous attitude, they can avoid emotional exhaustion. If they are not, conflict can happen. Taking Wikipedia as an example, it is highly likely that the debate will be transformed into blame and abuse rather than a constructive evaluation and feedback on each other. When it comes to being civil, you can avoid emotional fighting and look at articles through rational judgment. Ultimately, this can also affect the quality and accuracy of the article.
Cooperation is also the life force of Wikipedia, the product of collective intelligence. Conflicts between users arising from failing to maintain etiquette hinder collaboration. As I've talked about it in previous blog post, Wikipedia is a community. It is not an encyclopedia made by an individual, but an encyclopedia that many people around the world make together. We do not know who each other is, and we need to collaborate with people we do not know. So more courtesy, respect, and consideration for the other person are essential.
How then should a user who has immature behavior be controlled? In Wikipedia there are some rules that are already in control. If violence, malicious deletion, and unnecessary controversy are shown a number of times, the user will be limited to the use of Wikipedia. Other wikis often fail because of no control. It will be important for users to voluntarily make themselves behave with courtesy.
Some people who do not follow etiquette tend to be forced to act according to the mood of the community. So the mood of the community is also important. Anyway, were there any people who were not civil in the early days of Wikipedia? What was it like then? I think that rules are necessary for successfully collective intelligence. I want to hear what others think.
I also think that the rules in Wikipedia is necessary. That somehow tight rules make better and more polite opinions and articles. If there was no rules in Wikipedia, I could easily guess that Wikipedia couldn't be a representative of collective intelligence. So I also think that being civil on the Internet and rules in Wikipedia are necessary to make public place online.
