W5. Can we trust Wikipedia ? - Solène Huille

As we saw during last weeks, Wikipedia is an open source encyclopedia. It is very positive because everybody can participate and collaborate to create new articles and improve the existent articles. But, in the same way, the fact that it is open to everyone can have some negative aspects, like the reliability.
We can address different criticism to Wikipedia, both for the content and for the community: accuracy of information, quality of information, some bias in coverage, some controversial topics, like political or sexual content.

However, I think that the goal of Wikipedia is always in a sense of improvement to give more knowledge to all. There are moderators and people who control the content of each article. It is a long work, and it is not perfect, but it helps to develop more and more Wikipedia in a good way. It is also a good idea to collaborate, and there are discussions and people can ask, explain or give their point of view for deletion of some elements, for example.

I think we can trust Wikipedia in a certain way, and it is essential not to forget that it can contain many mistakes. If there is no enough source in one article, sometimes it is written that this article lacks sources. So, we need to be careful about that and do some researches to have more information, and to be sure.
It is very important to be attentive and not to think that the truth is on Wikipedia.

One question I have is how to always have a neutral point of view? Indeed, sometimes, it is difficult to determine when it is objective or not.

  1. For the neutral point of view, a Wikipedia page explains what it is exactly and how can you achieve neutrality. You can read this by following this link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Neutral_point_of_view
