W5. Can we trust Wikipedia? - ChaeHyeon Lee

We can trust Wikipedia. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia that is "Openness, Sharing, and participation." Articles written in Wikipedia must be authored with a reliable source. If there is any deviation against Wikipedia's policies, such as its source and neutrality, the article will be debated or be deleted. Articles with reliable sources have increased in reliability. Also, if the article is written entirely in accordance with Wikipedia policy, the article will undoubtedly be credible.

But we can't trust everything. That means it can't be 100 percent. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia that anyone can freely share their knowledge. The word to notice is 'anyone'. Anyone can use Wikipedia. In other words, knowledge sharing through collective intelligence is carried out by unspecified individuals. Anyone can use it, so there can be a lot of gaps. Many people use Wikipedia everyday, but they can not see all the articles that are modified and made everyday. Wikipedia is not only modified by experts. Even if you are not an expert, you can modify it. That is why the article may have errors. The same is true of the reason why you should refrain from using Wikipedia as a source of information when undertaking assignments at university. There may also be mistakes because the articles are written by humans. It is possible to confuse Wikipedia's policies and include its subjective opinions in its contents.

Nevertheless, I think the reason why I believe that Wikipedia is trustworthy is because of Wikipedia’s rapid edit. Many users constitute Wikipedia through monitoring. In the case of controversial articles in Wikipedia, remodification about the modification is made within two minutes. As such, Articles with that much false information or bias are rapidly modified. The modification is not made by just one person. Various articles are edited by various people. So it could be free from subjectivity and bias in editing. Wikipedia's policies to filter errors and distortions also have a strong effect on its reliability. Wikipedia's editorial policies are quite strict. The policies have many things to keep and there are many things that should not be done. However, these strict policies helped keep Wikipedia from flooding unreliable information. I think that these things make us trust Wikipedia.
