W5. Can we trust Wikipedia?

  There is a lot of information in Wikipedia today. Recently, students look for Wikipedia first when they do assignments. This is because various people edit and modify one piece of information. The history of the information is listed in detail from the most recent events. These things solve us questions of information. And to expand knowledge.

  So, can we trust Wikipedia?
  The biggest advantage of Wikipedia is collective intelligence. First, anyone can access information. Also, when someone else posts information, it can be modified without time and space constraints. If the information is wrong, others can edit it immediately. With these advantages, Wikipedia has become a leader in Web 2.0 and an open place.  But the biggest disadvantage of Wikipedia is reliability. First of all, Wikipedia has a problem of reliability of information because anyone can participate even if it is not professional. People can post smattering information or write promotional posts. There is a possibility to incite people by raising false information. In addition, anonymity can be used to disseminate false information intentionally. Especially, when editing information about a person, it is possible to sue or write false events. The information about the individual person should be careful because of the privacy problem.

  In conclusion, Wikipedia has both strengths and weaknesses. Personally I think Wikipedia is a trusted place. When quoting information, we start with critical thinking first. Such critical thinking will be of considerable help in confirming the authenticity or facts of information. In addition, if we find the wrong information in Wikipedia, we will modify it by referring to various sites. However, special care should be taken when revising information on personal details or sensitive information on the country.

Then I want to ask. Can we trust News? I think Wikipedia is based on sources. Every time we edit on Wikipedia we need the sources. If we don’t put sources, the information we wrote would be deleted.   So I think asking ‘How can we trust Wikipedia’ is kind of similar to ‘How can we trust News’. I know there could be subjective opinion on Wikipedia. If the topic is unpopular, the public opinion doesn’t focus, there’s could be no feedback and that makes Wiki subjective. for this reason, we have to think before we choose the topic in Wiki. If the topic isn’t famous enough and have no sources, we should think this information isn’t sure enough. but if the topic has clear sources we can have a trust on that information. I think it is not important to ask, ‘is the Wikipedia trustful’. It is important to ask ‘is this information on Wikipedia has a exact source?’.
