What is the benefit for Korean people if there are more English articles about Korea ? - Solène Huille


I think there are different benefits for Korean people if there are more articles in English on Wikipedia about their country.
First, of course, it permits to foreigners to learn more about Korean culture when they don’t have a lot of information or when they are in another country. Wikipedia is available in many countries, and it is simple to connect on this website. Wikipedia is very used in America or in Europe, more than in Asian countries.
Moreover, it is possible to attract more people in South Korea, for different reasons: tourism, work, exchange semester, different studies. In our global and more and more multicultural world, it is important for managers to go in other countries if they want to have business all over the world.
It can be interesting to do some studies, for example in sociology to compare some characteristics with other countries.
For Korean people who live abroad, it is important to gain knowledge about South Korea and it can be useful on Wikipedia.
The last benefit is to break stereotypes international people can have about Korea. More they have information, less they will have stereotypes, and they will learn about the Korean real life, the real culture, and the places to go in South Korea.

Then I want to ask. Can we trust News? I think Wikipedia is based on sources. Every time we edit on Wikipedia we need the sources. If we don’t put sources, the information we wrote would be deleted.   So I think asking ‘How can we trust Wikipedia’ is kind of similar to ‘How can we trust News’. I know there could be subjective opinion on Wikipedia. If the topic is unpopular, the public opinion doesn’t focus, there’s could be no feedback and that makes Wiki subjective. for this reason, we have to think before we choose the topic in Wiki. If the topic isn’t famous enough and have no sources, we should think this information isn’t sure enough. but if the topic has clear sources we can have a trust on that information. I think it is not important to ask, ‘is the Wikipedia trustful’. It is important to ask ‘is this information on Wikipedia has a exact source?’.
