W3. Why do you think people use Wikipedia? Why do others write for it? - JaeIg Lee(이재익)
Summary
The largest Wikipedia is the English Wikipedia. English Wikipedia has more than 33 million editors. Wikipedia in other languages than English Wikipedia also has many editors. The editors spend a great deal of time without expecting any reward. Their behavior is hard to explain in capitalist society. There is even a tax benefit to donating what is similar to Wikipedia's contribution. But Wikipedia doesn't have that kind of benefit.
Why do people write article and edit in Wikipedia?
Why are they so committed?
Interesting point
I don't think they put their time into promoting themselves to the public. I think they are trying to bridge the digital divide. Of course there are exceptions. This is the interesting part. If we read political and social articles, we can see people's efforts to justify their personal feelings and thoughts. So, there is a lot of vandalism in political and social issues article. And there are moves to positively assess their country in the name of patriotism. Wikipedia, which is neutral and should be delineated, is also the part that loses its neutrality.
Why do people try to justify their ideas and beliefs on Wikipedia?
Discussion Point
While Wikipedia playing a practical role in narrowing the knowledge gap, some studies show that they contain erroneous information.
Wouldn't it just aggravate the digital divide due to errors in knowledge?
I read it well. I'll answer the third question. Not everyone using Wikipedia will use only one search tool. I think they'll do a lot of other searches and stuff up the information. Also, through its own strict rules and discussions, Wikipedia receives few errors. For these reasons, I think we should not worry about the digital divide due to errors in knowledge.
