W3. Why do you think people use Wikipedia? Why do others write for it? - Clément Chevallier
Wikipedia is the 7th most visited website in the world and the largest and most popular general reference work on the internet. Many people use Wikipedia to search information they need and develop their knowledge. But why do people use Wikipedia ?
I think there are many reasons which explain why so many people use Wikipedia. First, you have access to a big amount of knowledge freely and any advertising disturb your research. So you don't need to pay, contrary to classic books or encyclopedia. Second, contents of Wikipedia are available in more than 290 languages. It means there is no barrier language. Third, you can use Wikipedia thanks to many devices as laptops, tablets or smartphones. So you can find information anywhere and anytime easily.
But we can wonder why do others write for it ? I think some people like to write and share their knowledge. Indeed, participating in the common interest causes a certain form of satisfaction, pride and pleasure. In addition, when you register on Wikipedia, you join a community and you become a member of this community. You can communicate with other users, help somebody and receive help in return for example. If more and more members join the community, write some article and add contents, it creates synergy and it encourages participation.
But I wonder if Wikipedia will be as popular as today in the future. Will users not get tired to add contents ? Will Wikipedia exist in 50 or 100 years ?

I also agree about We can see our native language on Wikipedia. But, Some articles are written in English only and are not written in Korean. These articles need to be translated for people from other countries.
ReplyDeleteBut It is so hard to translate other language. Because other countries have different cultures. So I think it's definitely an advantage, Also has blind spot. it likes Double-edged sword.

It’s difficult to know what will become of wikipedia, but what is sure is that it’s one of a kind project. I think the popularity of wikipedia will only increase as it will be translated in even more langage ...
ReplyDeletethis kind of initiative is a futuristic approach of what will become our society in 50 or 100 years !
