W2. My first edits. Describe why you made them, Jong chan KIm (김종찬)

1. Summary

 I had never used Wikipedia before this class. In Korea, there is a site called Tree wikis that has used platforms that are similar to Wikipedia, but I have never edited it in the tree wikis. As a assignment for the third week, I learned the rules and edits of Wikipedia through Wikipedia training. after thinking about what to do with editing Wikipedia this week, I decided to edit Wikipedia for my favorite singer first. I was nervous because I was editing it for the first time, but I felt proud after editing it. After that, I edited the social issues such as the Me-too movement and the Korea-U.S. FTA. If you confirm that I have edited at the moment, the administrator has deleted and allowed it to exist. Through this, I became both disappointed and excited. I am a beginner at Wikipedia yet, but I would like to be a little help to Wikipedia at the end of the class.

2. Interesting point

Most of my edits were social issues in South Korea these days. I edited these because I wanted to explore the activities of Koreans on a wiki. To edit this, I looked for news in the Republic of Korea and compared it in Wikipedia. I felt most strongly about modifying various information that the upload of incident information in Korea was slower than in other countries. This is probably because Wikipedia, as we learned and discussed in the previous time, has little influence in Korea. Through this first editing, I could feel many things about the lack of Wikipedia activities among Koreans. Besides the biggest issue, I could feel a lot of deficiencies in the articles that were transferred to Hangul. It was really disappointing.

3. discussion point
If you are active in Wikipedia, you will experience a lack of Korean activities compared to other countries. It can not be denied because it actually exists in data. How can Koreans improve their Wikipedia usage? I think the interface was more inconvenient than Naver, a large Korean portal. As Wikipedia users, I'm sure you realize how useful and nice Wikipedia is. I want to hear your thought.

W5. Can we trust Wikipedia? Yun-Jin Kim

Then I want to ask. Can we trust News? I think Wikipedia is based on sources. Every time we edit on Wikipedia we need the sources. If we don’t put sources, the information we wrote would be deleted.   So I think asking ‘How can we trust Wikipedia’ is kind of similar to ‘How can we trust News’. I know there could be subjective opinion on Wikipedia. If the topic is unpopular, the public opinion doesn’t focus, there’s could be no feedback and that makes Wiki subjective. for this reason, we have to think before we choose the topic in Wiki. If the topic isn’t famous enough and have no sources, we should think this information isn’t sure enough. but if the topic has clear sources we can have a trust on that information. I think it is not important to ask, ‘is the Wikipedia trustful’. It is important to ask ‘is this information on Wikipedia has a exact source?’.

These days lots of controversial problems are rising. And because of those problems, people fight on the Internet. But I think most of problems happen because of a lack of civic attitudes. As I highlighted the discussion section of Wikipedia last post, talking together with having civic attitudes is very important point. On the Internet lots of people meet. And this means all of them has different thinking and experiences different cultures. So it is certain that everyone's opinion is different. But I think from this difference, the collective intelligence comes. So I think this difference is very important.
