W2. My first edits.
In last class, we talked about the question, “How can Korea benefit if the English language coverage of Korean topics on Wikipedia is improved?” There are a lot of people who speak English and Wikipedia is more popular in most other developed countries than in South Korea. Considering that, the more English Wiki articles about Korea, the more opportunities to introduce and show Korea. People from many other countries who read articles of Korean topics can get to know about the culture of Korea and to have an interest in that. That is why I wrote enthusiastically English Wikipeida article about tourist attraction in 'Jeju' last semester in other class. Since I visited Jeju Island last year, I made a Wikipedia article about 'Oreum'. Because I thought that I should inform about the very beautiful landscape of 'Oreum' to many other foreigners.
I think that to write article about Korean topic is so meaningful. That is why my first editing work in this class is about '2018 Pyeongchang Olympics'. I actually visited Pyeongchang twice during the Olympics and Paralympics. I visited there on the closing day of the PyeongChang Olympic Games in February and watched the Paralympics Games of Alpine skiing in March. During the Olympics and Paralympics, I felt that mascots ‘Soohorang’ and ‘Bandabi' have been loved by many people internationally and domestically, and a lot of souvenirs about them have been sold. But in the article of '2018 Pyeongchang Olympics', there is no pictures of mascots. So I put the 2018 Winter Olympics mascot photos with explanations. I used 'Wikimedia Commons' image because there are freely usable media files which anyone can distribute. You can use many freely images at this website(here). Later, I think I have to upload the picture of mascot which I took myself and I will use that. And I included items like 'The Winter Olympics' and 'the 2018 Pyeongchang Paralympics' in category of 'See Also' so that many people can also see the page of them. In addition, I also added underlines and quotations in the pages related to Korea such as 'Sumi Jo' and 'Han river'.
I was surprised that a lot of information about the words I searched for were written by many people than my thought, and once again I could feel the power of collective intelligence. If you click on 'History', you can see that more people are participating in than you think. Of course, there will be many more topics to be written in the future, but if we fill in the articles with little effort, we will make richer articles.
I think your intention is very meaningful. And I hope that many people in other countries read and get information of Korea from your edits in Wikipedia. Someday I want to edit in English and from that edit people in other countries get information and interest about Korea either.
ReplyDeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteI appreciate your mindset as a foreigner, since sometimes it's hard for us to find some informations. Before coming to korea i found most of the informations through many blogs. But if all the informations are centered in one place it could boost South Korea attractiveness, and make South Korean history in everyone's reach ! My intention is to do the same about the french related topic, i always see disparity of content with the english version of the page.
