W2. My first edits. Describe why you made them. - Hyerim Won


We talked about the question “How can Korea benefit if the English language coverage of Korean topics on Wikipedia is improved?” last class. First of all, I thought Wikipedia is the place where foreigners can easily find information about Korea when they search for it. In other words, Wikipedia is a platform that can help you see information at a glance without having to search hard. I will focus on this point to decide what I edit.

The story about Boracay closed was updated in Wikipedia in English, but it was not updated in Wikipedia in Korea, so I consulted the article that day to revise the contents. Later, I couldn't recall what to edition for, so I came up with a keyword. Warm spring weather is coming and people will serach the place they can see spring flowers. So I set the keyword ' Festival in spring ' and looked for local flower festivals in Korea. I searched Wikipedia for references to Korean spring festivals. Cities with no mention of the festival contents I added the category " Festival " to supplement the information found on the festival's homepage. I was able to edit like I became a guide. 

At first, there was a little bit of fear of me being able to edination, but after doing two or three, I got used to learning. I used Wikipedia only for searching. I never thought it would be able to editing. So it is a more interesting experience. It was for my assignment, but after I accessed various articles and official homepages, I also learned about the new information and the new things I knew wrong. It is not easy to learn, but I hope to become more familiar with the edination. So, we would like to be able to editing on a broader range.

    I am interested that you added a new category. When I first visited Wikipedia, it was hard to find information because the categories were not subdivided. So your achievements seem very efficient.

W5. Can we trust Wikipedia? Yun-Jin Kim

Then I want to ask. Can we trust News? I think Wikipedia is based on sources. Every time we edit on Wikipedia we need the sources. If we don’t put sources, the information we wrote would be deleted.   So I think asking ‘How can we trust Wikipedia’ is kind of similar to ‘How can we trust News’. I know there could be subjective opinion on Wikipedia. If the topic is unpopular, the public opinion doesn’t focus, there’s could be no feedback and that makes Wiki subjective. for this reason, we have to think before we choose the topic in Wiki. If the topic isn’t famous enough and have no sources, we should think this information isn’t sure enough. but if the topic has clear sources we can have a trust on that information. I think it is not important to ask, ‘is the Wikipedia trustful’. It is important to ask ‘is this information on Wikipedia has a exact source?’.

These days lots of controversial problems are rising. And because of those problems, people fight on the Internet. But I think most of problems happen because of a lack of civic attitudes. As I highlighted the discussion section of Wikipedia last post, talking together with having civic attitudes is very important point. On the Internet lots of people meet. And this means all of them has different thinking and experiences different cultures. So it is certain that everyone's opinion is different. But I think from this difference, the collective intelligence comes. So I think this difference is very important.
