1. Summary

Last semester, I edited Sangnoksu Unit stationed in Somalia, Angola and East Timor. Despite the fact that South Korea is a contingent of troops overseas, no information was written on the English Wikipedia. I could find new information about the history and symbol of the unit by searching the Ministry of National Defense and various articles. Also, I added information and reference about Garosu-gil. Despite being a popular tourist attraction in Korea, there was not much information about Garosu-gil. Garosu-gil is a popular tourist attraction recommended for foreigners, and there are a variety of cafes and restaurants. I will edit more in the future.

2. Interesting Point

There was something I felt while editing Garosu-gil. Last week, we discussed about ‘How can Korea benefit if the English  language coverage of Korean topics on Wikipedia is improved?’. Although it is a familiar place to Koreans and has a variety of information, I felt that Wikipedia does not have information and therefore can not be introduced to foreigners. The more these unique places and information are edited in Korea, the more curious foreigners will be about it.

3. Discussion Point

Wikipedia has its own photo-uploading feature. However, due to copyright issues, I can not upload the pictures I want and need to go through a complicated process of publishing sources to add them. What do you think about this?

Comments

  1. I think copyright system of Wikipedia is too strict.
I wanted to use photo what I searched but It couldn't too.

Maybe It's a big difference in South Korea and some the other countries.
Copyright isn't too strict in Korea but it's in not some the others.
So we should adapt environment of Wikipedia. What else we can do now?
