W1. What do I know about Wikipedia and what do I want to learn about it? Geon-Ju Lee

Wikipedia is a community. In other words, as a representative type of collective intelligence, it is a platform where the abstract concept of collective intelligence can be seen in real. People accumulated information and created collective intelligence by sharing intelligence, fighting and accepting knowledge. After all, we communicate, interact and collaborate in a web-based community called Wikipedia.

The most interesting thing is ‘Wikipedia is a freely and voluntarily collaborative community’. People enter information voluntarily without expecting anything in return. These people form a knowledge completely. But, What makes them so? What makes them behave?

I would like to discuss with you the motivation to elicit collective intelligence. I think it is a sense of achievement and belonging. You'll only be motivated if you realize what I can get out of my work and why I do it.

For example, If I edit information about Hanyang University, I can feel a sense of belonging to Hanyang University and a sense of pride in providing information. Psychological fulfillment can be a great satisfaction to have completed a task when I help others by adding information to Wikipedia. In addition, If I add knowledge or information to one category, I can also feel a sense of belonging to being one of the provider of information. What do you think is the trigger for generating collective intelligence?

  1. I think that the sense of belonging to an organization can guide our willingness to improve this page. I experienced it in my choice of articles for my first edits. Effectively, I have chosen activities I like or institutions related to my life.
It represents something that we know well so it is easier to talk about and you can be glad to share it with others. You can feel pride: citizen of a country, member of a club, student of a university, etc.
Nevertheless, this cannot be the unique source of motivation for a person to improve an article. Some people have other knowledge than their experiences: the theoretical knowledge acquired during their studies. The more the people specialize in a field, the more they can add elements that did not appear before on Wikipedia.
