W1. What do I know about Wikipedia and what do I want to learn about it? Yun-Jin Kim

I think Wikipedia is a ‘Free’ encyclopedia. People don’t have to pay for the information. They can also freely access, modify, edit, delete information. So, it could be called ‘Encyclopedia ft. teamwork’.
Wikipedia has two big features. One is it’s easy to understand, Two, it could has subjective opinion not like encyclopedia used to be.

As I said before, Wikipedia is opened to everyone in the world. But let’s think about the images of ‘Encyclopedia’. Many people think ‘encyclopedia’, hard, boring, book for knowledge people, thick etc. People feel hard for encyclopedia, so do I. But Wikipedia? I don’t think so. Many people feel free to access Wikipedia. Why? I think it’s because it’s easy to understand. Since everyone can edit information on Wikipedia they use normal, frequently used words on Wikipedia. That makes Wikipedia easy to understand. And that makes people visit Wikipedia more and more.

But opening to everyone could cause subjective opinion. Like choosing words, shade of meaning. This could make Wikipedia inaccurate. Years ago, when the Korean Government announced the government will publish Korean history textbook themselves for the students of Korea, many parents, students and history teachers protested. One of their concern was the source of government history textbook was from Wikipedia. Protesters said Wikipedia can not be the source, since Wikipedia is written by anyone the information may not be verified. I think their point is quite right. Everyone who are not expert can write on Wikipedia. That makes Wikipedia free and easy but that also make inaccuracy.

As everything does, There’s advantages and weaknesses in Wikipedia. I want to know its features and think about how can I get through this weaknesses.

  2. Hi, I really enjoyed your opinion.
In the Wikipedia, numerous people work together to understand the subject.
In this point, I agree with your idea 'teamwork'.
Also, I totally express concur with the statement that Wikipedia can not avoid being subjective.
Since every single person can modify information, I believe that the word 'subjective' is an ineluctable destiny to Wikipedia.

  3. I agree with your point.
Wikipedia can cause problems with the clarity and objectivity of information because even non-professionals can write freely.
Wikipedia instructs you to disclose the sources when entering information.
However, if the article or column is the source, I think it will be difficult to protect the objectivity by writer's opinion
