What is the future of Wikipedia? Will it exist in 20 years? 50? 100?

I felt using Wikipedia for years in class. Wikipedia is a service that specializes in English. I think this is a natural result. It is because Wikipedia is a service that started in the United States, and English is so universal that it has the formula of world official language. Therefore, there was very little information about other languages except English, and the number of users was significantly lower. The example includes South Korea. Because accurate and informative quality articles are concentrated in the English language, many people who fail to overcome language barriers have been unable to properly utilize Wikipedia.

But I expect the future to be different. Because translation technology is growing very much every day. Thanks to the translation technology, mankind hopes to live in a world where language barriers are low. I also agree. Thus, in the future, we will have a lower entry barrier to the language we have been through using Wikipedia. In other words, it will be easier to use quality information written in foreign languages. We will also be able to pass information written in our own language to other speakers no matter what language they live in.

As anyone can see, Wikipedia's rise will not continue. It is hard to imagine Wikipedia's image in 20, 50, and 100 years from now in a world that is changing so rapidly. I think in 20 years now, there will be some innovative and challenging services that replace or surpass Wikipedia as the world changes and flows.

But what is certain is that Wikipedia will still exist in 100 years. As with the ‘Encyclopedia Britannica’, which has been around for about 250 years. Encyclopedia Britannica is the longest ever to be published in English since its first edition was published in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1768. At first, it was only published in paper books, but it released the "Britannica Electronics Index " and "Britannica CD " as the world changed. In addition, it has developed the 'Britannica Online' to make it available to readers on the Internet today. As such, Wikipedia, like Encyclopedia Britannica, will remain in line with the changing world.

  1. Right! Wikipedia will be survived. But there will be changed, innovation and development.

  2. You're right. Translation technology is evolving more and more and I completely agree that this will have an important impact on the development of Wikipedia. But translation is ultimately human, and I think there will be limits no matter how advanced the translation technology is. So, as you say, Wikipedia will survive on the basis of English, but I think depending on the translator, the maturity of other languages can be reduced.
