W13. Blog topic : Can Wikipedia disapear ? - Irma Koum


Wikipedia exist for 17 years now and it has been in these 17 years one of the most used platform to search information in the world. Wikipedia it is constantly evolving and people are more and more involved in it. Moreover Wikipedia is not only a free encyclopedia, it is also a community where people are sharing their knowledge, work and also discuss about some interesting topics. Nowadays we notice a rise of communities like that even if it’s not for encyclopedia, because we are living in a sharing economy where people love to share the information they have.

So with these points I personally don’t think that it can disappear. But the thing is that even if Wikipedia it is a platform which follow the trend of sharing economy many people still think that it is not a reliable source for information so it is not really usefull. For example in France when we have presentations, essays or research to do, our professors don’t want any information which come from Wikipedia, and your work can be penalized or not accepted if you use and information which come from it. In this way, I think that Wikipedia has so much things to do to prove that many information are reliable, because if professors forbid students to use the platform, in a few years Wikipedia will be useless.

I rarely had access to Wikipedia before this class. Because there is a service called 'Knowledge in' operated by Naver in Korea. I've been used to the 'Knowledge in' for a long time, so I've always used it if there's something I don't know. However, I got to know Wikipedia in this class. Wikipedia has a much larger volume of data than I thought, and it is being used by people all over the world. Also, anyone could edit information. I want to search and edit my favorite soccer information. So I decided to do the editing on my idols, Ko Jong-soo and Nadson.   What was interesting about editing was that although the Korean Wikipedia was detailed by the players who played in the Korean league, the English Wikipedia had little or no information.
