W10. What would make writing on Wikipedia easier for me? - Ji Young, An

At first, writing on Wikipedia was very difficult to me. Maybe because I am not good at writing by using a computer. And still, it is not easy for me. Especially writing on English Wikipedia is very difficult to me. I think it is because of the language problem and also culture problem. It is hard for me to easily edit English Wikipedia because I am scared of making a cultural mistake. To get to the point, to me, the form of Wikipedia makes writing easier. And the language translating program also makes writing easier.

Form of Wikipedia is related to the code of Wikipedia. I mean that code in edit source category. If I want to make the same format of the other article, I could go to that article's edit source and use the same code of it. Then I could easily make the same format. Of course I don't know and understand that code. But I could use that code easily. I think because of this system, I could use Wikipedia more easily.

And language translating program means that the connection between same text but different language. If I don't understand some article because of the language problem, I could read the Korean article, if connected, and understand the context. But it is still hard for me to write on English Wikipedia.

    I think it is normal to be less comfortable with another language than your mother tongue, but it is nice to try to write articles in English, even if our English is not perfect. About the potential cultural mistakes, we must be vigilant. But as Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, I think we can't do value judgments, so don't be afraid to do cultural mistakes, because on Wikipedia, it is quite scarce to do it.

These days lots of controversial problems are rising. And because of those problems, people fight on the Internet. But I think most of problems happen because of a lack of civic attitudes. As I highlighted the discussion section of Wikipedia last post, talking together with having civic attitudes is very important point. On the Internet lots of people meet. And this means all of them has different thinking and experiences different cultures. So it is certain that everyone's opinion is different. But I think from this difference, the collective intelligence comes. So I think this difference is very important. W5. Can we trust Wikipedia? Yun-Jin Kim

Then I want to ask. Can we trust News? I think Wikipedia is based on sources. Every time we edit on Wikipedia we need the sources. If we don’t put sources, the information we wrote would be deleted.   So I think asking ‘How can we trust Wikipedia’ is kind of similar to ‘How can we trust News’. I know there could be subjective opinion on Wikipedia. If the topic is unpopular, the public opinion doesn’t focus, there’s could be no feedback and that makes Wiki subjective. for this reason, we have to think before we choose the topic in Wiki. If the topic isn’t famous enough and have no sources, we should think this information isn’t sure enough. but if the topic has clear sources we can have a trust on that information. I think it is not important to ask, ‘is the Wikipedia trustful’. It is important to ask ‘is this information on Wikipedia has a exact source?’.
