Why free culture matters?-Tae Joon YOO 유태준
1. Summary
Since childhood, learning about copyright concepts has not worked well. So it was very common for me to bring the work of others back to Facebook and my personal homepage and bring music with me. It was not until high school years that I learned that the absence of such concepts in copyright could not create the correct Internet culture. However, we can see that the claim to copyright may be expressed in other ways. Copyright has the opposite concept. Copyright literally means that each person can share and distribute copyrighted works freely without acknowledging ownership. It has the same aspect as a free cursor move. Free Culture Movement was implemented by Lawrence Lessig in 2005. The movement started in the sense that the limited copyright law prevents individuals from being free and creative.
2.intersting point
There are pros and cons of acknowledging copyright. A pro-copyright opinion holds that the copyright must be recognized to be well rewarded for the creator. And they argue that the copyright recognition can give the creators the right compensation. On the other hand, the anti-copyright stance, or the stance against free culture, claims to take away freedom from the general public because the copyright is too strong. Both these arguments make sense. But the two arguments are never compatible. With the advent of the digital age, the claim to the ownership of knowledge has become very important with the development of technology. For instance, 3D printers are introduced. The advent of this technology created a very important issue for copyright. Objects printed on 3D Printer can be recreated several times if they have a plan. As a result, if a clear law on copyright is not defined, theft of knowledge could occur. An alternative must be considered.
3.Discussion
Pensiologists in the Middle Ages failed because they did not share knowledge. If they shared and studied knowledge together, their knowledge would have been more prosperous. However, if one's efforts are not recognized, the motivation for the study is gone. How do you adjust the gap over copyright in these incompatible situations?
