W4. Discuss Reagle's Chapters 1-2 – ChaeHyeon Lee

1. Summary
Wikipedia is not simply an online multi-lingual encyclopedia. Unlike books in the library, Wikipedia is a community-based encyclopedia. The wiki stands for "super fast" in the Hawaiian language. This means that it is easy to edit. This reading focuses on the collaborative culture of Wikipedia. A community-based encyclopedia like Wikipedia should have a "good faith collaborative culture." Attempts to increase access to information through collaboration are needed. It should be a place where every single human being can freely share in the sum of all knowledge. Wikipedia is interested in "the sum of all knowledge". Jimmy Wales, co-founder of Wikipedia and founding member of Nupedia, means that an encyclopedia like Wikipedia would be a force to transform the world.

Also, according to Wales, Wikipedia follows three policies: “Neutral Point of View,” “No Original Research,” and “Verifiability”. These three policies must follow in Wikipedia. If you do not follow these three things in Wikipedia, it is not appropriate as a Wikipedia article. It focuses on cultural acceptance and interpretation of Wikipedia.Wikipedia’s logo is that of a not yet complete global jigsaw puzzle. This means the direction, goal, and dream that Wikipedia wants. It can be said that it means going through collaboration like collecting scattered pieces and completing a puzzle.

Before Wikipedia, there were several encyclopedias based on wikis such as Nupedia. There were also many projects like Wikipedia. The foundations of these projects were also collective intelligence. Wikipedia is the result of the failure of many projects. The projects discussed are an attempt to embody the good faith of the collaborator and to realize a universal vision of reaching cooperation. Finally, the author emphasizes the need for "good faith" culture once more.

2. Interesting things
Jimmy Wales, Wikipedia cofounder, noted in December 2005 that “half the edits by logged in users belong to just 2.5% of logged in users.”
This part was interesting. As with any site or community, only minorities are active. Every community consists of a passive majority and an active minority. But I thought Wikipedia would be a little different, but it was not. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia that allows you to view information without logging in. But at the same time, it is an encyclopedia that allows you to participate in articles beyond simple encyclopedias. So I had expected the participation rate would be higher. There are numerous edits and corrections in Wikipedia. I think editing done by a minority may cause negative consequences. So, I think that Wikipedia needs a solution for this.

3. Discussion
In editing in Wikipedia, the person who deleted my edit, pointing out that it was inappropriate was almost the same user. Such a person is always monitoring the field and acting as a person in charge of the field. I was wondering whether only a positive effect of editing and extending content by 2.5% users is possible. Of course, they will also make the edits that fit the Wikipedia policy. But since they are not a machine, I do not think it will have a positive effect. On the contrary, it means that 97.5% of people use Wikipedia as an online encyclopedia. I would like to discuss the problem of bias that might exist between 2.5% of users expanding wikipedia and 97.5% of users who accept wikipedia that they made as fact.

Comments

  1. I also was interestend in that Jimmy Wales's saying. Because It means few logged in users are making hard a lot of edits and they contributes their knowledge continuously. Before, I expected the opposition. I thought the more people makes Wikipedia but in fact few people who is enthusiastic contributors do edits.
