W4. Discuss Reagle's Chapters 1-2 - Solène Huille
In the chapter 1, it is very
important to know that Wikipedia is both a community and an encyclopedia.
Moreover, Wikipedia is based on a good faith collaborative culture. So, if
there are some controversial articles (example: Nazism), and if there are
disagreements among Wikipedia users, you need to talk about it in a cordial
manner. It is necessary to respect others Wikipedia users and to abide to the
norm of Wikiquette.
“Wiki wiki” means super-fast in
Hawaiian language.
Anyone can edit on Wikipedia, but
there is the “Holy trinity” of Wikipedia to respect: neutral point of view, no
original research and verifiability.
The second chapter is about the pursuit
of the universal encyclopedia, and more about different encyclopedia projects before
Wikipedia. Diderot, Paul Otlet and Wells have developed different projects like
the Encyclopédie, the repertory and the universal decimal classification, and
the “world brain”. It is the beginning of collective intelligence.
Nevertheless, it takes a long time to have some successful projects like
Wikipedia, because it was difficult to organize.
Nupedia, for example, was not a success because it was difficult to
write articles on this website. People needed to have very important knowledge
to write an article.
The success of Wikipedia is based on the way that it is very easy for
everyone to publish articles, and to do contributions. You don’t need to be an
expert.
On Wikipedia, I really feel to be part of a community when I asked a
question last week about an article to write on a forum page. I also answered
to someone. It is a real community and it is useful that everybody can help everybody.
That is for me the definition of good faith collaborative culture.
After reading the 2 chapters, I have one question. How can we develop
more the use of Wikipedia especially in some regions of the world where the
access of Internet is limited?
Does Wikipedia have a role to play, to facilitate the access to
information and knowledge in the poorest countries for example?
