W3. Why do you think people use Wikipedia ? Why do others write for it ? - Solène Huille

Wikipedia is very useful all over the world, especially in America and in Europe, like we saw on the map during Collective Intelligence class.
I think people use Wikipedia for different reasons. First, it is an encyclopedia available in different languages, so we can find a lot of articles in different fields. People can write new articles or change old ones, and it is always changing, with new contributions. The users can feel proud of what they wrote, and they feel to take part of a project and of a community. Moreover, it is always in a sense of improvement, and this encyclopedia is free, it means that you only need Internet access to have information.
Another important point is that the information is from different countries, with different cultures and so it exists a certain diversity on Wikipedia. Users want to share about their backgrounds, their cultures.

I appreciate to ask questions on Wikipedia when I am not sure of something. I think that it is important for some people to communicate with other Wikipedia users.

We have seen that Wikipedia is not used the same way in different countries (quantitative way), but I wonder in qualitative terms. Does the implication of each user differ according to the region of the world ?
Would some people be more motivated to work for free? Does it depend on the culture in which we are ? I think this is an interesting question to raise in our international world, especially like we are in a class with students of different nationalities.
