W13. Can Wikipedia disappear? - Solène Huille
Wikipedia is a very famous encyclopedia, well-known all over the world.
Since its creation, Wikipedia has evolved. Now, Wikipedia is a real and big community,
with many users.
I don’t think Wikipedia can disappear in the years following.
Indeed, the access of Wikipedia is easy, there is a free collaboration
and a free use.
Moreover, the community is very important, the sense of belonging is
very high. Wikipedia users can feel proud of their work, when they create or
develop an article, and they can discuss and improve many things by this way.
Nevertheless, some websites disappear. So, there is always a possibility
for a website to disappear. In the case of Wikipedia, it could be by lack of
funding. It is important to remember that Wikipedia can work only with
financial donations. It could be also possible if the number of users decrease
significaly, if they are not satisfied or if they have many disagreements on
Wikipedia with other users for example.
Another reason of a possible disappearance is the competition with other
encyclopedias or other websites and ways to find information easily. For example,
we can notice that Encarta was a numeric encyclopedia available in different
languages, but it in 2009, Encarta stopped because people used much more
Wikipedia, which was growing more.
I think Wikipedia cannot disappear soon but maybe in a long time.
In case of Wikipedia disappearance, what could be another mean to
develop collective intelligence? Is it possible to imagine other online
encyclopedias in the future or on the contrary other more innovative solutions for
the sharing of knowledge?
Solène Huille
From my point of view, Wikipedia is the best and the most complete online encyclopedia so I don't imagine another online encyclopedia which will substitute for Wikipedia. However, I think it is possible that a more innovative and easier solution for the sharing of knowledge appears in the future and become the new reference.
