W13. Can Wikipedia disappear? / posted by Sojeong Yeon
The question 'Can Wikipedia disappear' is an interesting question. I have never thought that Wikipedia would disappear before. What would happen if the articles that many people around the world wrote disappear? Wikipedia is the product of collective intellect that many people have created at the same time and in a bit. Then can it disappear? We can think of this question in two parts.
First, is it possible that Wikipedia disappear from our perception? Will there a situation where Wikipedia which the vast majority of people are usingin the world lose popularity in the future? So can there be a situation where many people no longer use Wikipedia? Like 'Cyworld' in Korea, it started before Facebook and became very popular in Korea, but it had lost ground to Facebook. When I was young, I could not imagine that the site would disappear while I was using 'Cyworld'. However, Facebook, which connects people all over the world, has become a global SNS over Cyworld. The same goes for Wikipedia. I think this question is in a similar context to the question 'Can Facebook disappear?' Unlike Cyworld, Wikipedia is already used by many people around the world, and many users are living in the culture that Wikipedia has already created. That is why Wikipedia will not disappear easily.
Second, if the Wikipedia operator can not run a page for any reason, should all the posts in Wikipedia disappear? Can the leader remove Wikipedia on his own authority? The articles and talks in Wikipedia is made by users, and who has the authority to delete it? Because Wikipedia is a collaborative work, and it contains a lot of data that many users has created, it is hardly easy for Wikipedia to disappear. Wikipedia is really used by a lot of people, and more posts will be created by many users in the future. People will want to write more and more articles voluntarily and will continue their activities. Such a free culture is already established in Wikipedia. As long as this culture is deeply embedded, Wikipedia will not disappear.
Could an online encyclopedia replace Wikipedia? If an encyclopedia with more advanced features comes out, then can Wikipedia disappear? What are some of the features that can surpass Wikipedia? Or is there a feature that Wikipedia needs to be updated to survive? I would like to discuss this together.
I agree with your opinion that Wikipedia will not disappear. I also think that if Wikipedia operator couldn't run a page for any reason, some people would take over Wikipedia and operate again. This could happen because Wikipedia is collective intelligence that made from lots of people's efforts. So I agree with your opinion that Wikipedia will not disappear.
