W13. Can Wikipedia disappear? - Kim Byung Chan

I think Wikipedia will not disappear. Wikipedia is an Internet encyclopedia that can be used concurrently anywhere in the world. So unless the sudden destruction of the planet or the enormous technology that will replace the Internet is invented, Wikipedia will continue to exist within computers or smartphones. However, Wikipedia has a problem to watch out for not disappear.

Wikipedia is an example of collective intelligence. This collective intelligence gathered individual information and became one big dictionary. However, individual information lacks professionality and reference. Lack of professionality and reference makes the information less trustworthy and more likely to be replaced by information from other organizations. While a benevolent dictator of Wikipedia will try to prevent the declining professionality, he is also less trustworthy than other professional groups because of his compassion. I think we have to solve this problem before we can take the Wikipedia user to another organization.

Despite these problems, Wikipedia can not disappear. While information is not entirely reliable, Wikipedia's information includes cultural explanations as well as objective explanations. When we understand something, understanding through the cultural background can be more helpful than simply lexical meaning. And as long as culture does not disappear in the world, Wikipedia's information will continue to be updated.

As time goes on, I think that the domain of the individual in Wikipedia is becoming more and more wider, which can lead to problems of professionalism and trust. However, since the content of Wikipedia will grow more and more, Wikipedia will not disappear.
