W9. Discuss Reagle's Chapters 3-4 - Kim Byung Chan

Summary

Wikipedia is open content that anyone can use anywhere on the Internet. Therefore, non-interference is important. If the interference is severe, it is hard to say that Wikipedia is sufficiently open content. In addition, since Wikipedia prohibits discrimination, it is readily available to anyone through free ID creation. In this way, the users of Wikipedia who can participate maintain transparency by monitoring each other. It also creates integrity through a collaborative culture.

The five features mentioned above are important elements that open content, transparency, integrity, nondiscrimination, noninterference of Wikipedia. But it's hard to keep them in real time. Because Wikipedia is open content, it is available to everyone. at this time, It's hard to imagine everyone doing different things. In other words, there is interference. Even if an ID creation is required, integrity and transparency can not always be ensured because anonymity is ensured. This chapter considers these issues to be addressed by a collaborative culture. If many people using Wikipedia are trying to protect the five elements, it will be an ideal Wikipedia. That's why collaboration culture is important in Wikipedia.

Because Wikipedia content can be added and modified by everyone, a collaborative culture develops among users. In other words, a collaborative culture enables continuous accumulation of knowledge. And this means the constant evolution of Wikipedia. In Wikipedia's collaborative culture, we can see what the future society is going to do.

2. interesting point

I think collaboration culture is not yet possible worldwide. Traffic and communication have developed, but there are many more who can not use this culture. Nonetheless, efforts for Wikipedia's global collaborative culture are ahead of its time. Considering that the future society is oriented towards collaboration culture, Wikipedia is a good example of a successful collaboration culture. Wikipedia is not free from criticism and anonymity. However, I think there is a clear reference to the future society that the five elements are protected flexibly, monitoring each other, and creating new contents.

3. Discussion

Non-interference is needed to protect Wikipedia. However, interference between each other is also necessary to protect transparency and integrity. Since the standard for protecting transparency and integrity are not clear at this time, content for information sharing can be backed up due to interference. For example, when a user shares information with an unfamiliar private company, if it is considered to be a publicity, the content of the information is backed up due to interference. But the user may not be promoting. On the other hand, famous companies, such as Nike or Adidas, do not back up content. Because the standard of publicity and information is not clear, it can be inconvenient when users use Wikipedia. We need to worry about this standard.
