W11. Discuss Reagle's chapter 5 - Solène Huille

The chapter 5 is about the challenges of consensus.
First, what is consensus? The definition is the following in the text: “Any group in agreement about something whose opinion is the same as yours”
As we saw before, Wikipedia is an open community, so it can be very difficult sometimes to find agreements and consensus, when there are misunderstandings and when people disagree.
It is important to identify the difficulties of consensus decision making, to try to find better consensus for the future. Consensus for Wikipedia users permits to work together.

An interesting point in this chapter is the disambiguation in Wikipedia. It is when an article can be associated to more than one other article, because of its title. This kind of problem creates disagreements. Even if there are policies and WikiProjects, it is difficult to solve this issue.
Moreover, the “Consensus Decision-Making” has some benefits: the consensus is lists requirements of consensus that, if achieved, can also be considered benefits: inclusive, participatory, cooperative, egalitarian, and solution-oriented.

How is important the culture of good faith and collaboration developed on Wikipedia to have consensus?
What are the other elements which can help to have a better consensus on Wikipedia?
Do you think voting is a good option when the consensus seems impossible?

  1. I saw your articles well! Thanks for the good writing! :)

Answering ur question. I don't think 'voting' is a good option.
Voting has majority and minority and voting means following majority. But minority has their own opinions and has reasons for that. I know that you are not meaning that minority is wrong but we can't choose minority though. Because there are some reasons; that minority says, that couldn't have consensus.
