W6. How important is it to be civil online on the Internet? - ChaeHyeon Lee
It is important to be civil online on the Internet. In the information society we live in, the Internet is a big part of our lives. It is almost a whole. The Internet makes our lives convenient. Banking, shopping, and other activities are now being done online. Online has become another society. There are various online activities such as blog, community, SNS, comment, as well as online activities such as Wikipedia. Online and offline are hard to distinguish. What happens online affects offline. Conversely, what happens offline can also affect online activity.
For example, there was an incident involving speed skater Kim Bo-reum in the PyeongChang Olympic Games. The controversy began with what happened in the Team Pursuit game and the interviews. Netizens and the media pointed out that they should not happen in a Team Pursuit game, and they continued to sign the national petition. What happened offline has had an impact on the online as comments and criticism from SNS flared up. However, due to excessive criticism and malicious comments, Kim is currently undergoing psychotherapy
. What happened online has affected offline again. Appropriate criticism of the problem is essential to correcting the mistake. But indiscriminate criticism needs to be considered.

There is the word 'netiquette'. It is a compound word of network and etiquette. This means common sense etiquette that netizens must keep on the network. With the development of the Internet, online etiquette has become as important as etiquette in everyday life. In Korea, the term ‘netiquette’ was activated in the early 2000s, and at that time it was active enough to be taught at school. But as Netiquette gets accustomed to it more and more, I think that we are forgetting that it is a target to learn. Malicious comments and criticism based on anonymity are the obstacles to desirable online activities. Now is time to think about etiquette to keep online as people's online activities are active and important I think it is important to emphasize the importance of attitude and online citizenship as online activities are important. As online is becoming more and more developed, it seems necessary to create a mature internet culture. The role of the citizen will be the most important in the process.
I totally agree with your thoughts! online is now a new society. Well.. actually it has been years online came deeply in our lives. But the weird thing is schools, society don't teach or advice or tell people about Netiquette seriously. Korean people only learn deeply about Korean, Math, English. Manners aren't taught in school. ;(
