W6. How important is it to be civil online on the Internet?
In the
text you have this part which is important: “A subtle, but important,
incoherence is found within the Wikipedia “Policies and Guidelines” page:
“Respect other contributors. Wikipedia contributors come from many different
countries and cultures and have widely different views. Treating others with respect
is key to collaborating effectively in building an encyclopedia.”
This part for me means
that, if you don’t respect each other on the website Wikipedia will not work
and if this respect was not here at the beginning maybe Wikipedia will not be
that successful and will not have that many users.
Nowadays, the virtual
communities have taken a big scope because now if you want advices and opinions
you just go on YouTube or other forum where you can find people who have done
what you want to do and what you want to test. You also have many communities
created because the people has the same interest, so now these virtual
communities is like the real life. You must respect everyone, because in a
first and genuine sight people who share information wants to help and to be helped
by accepting comments and discussion.
So, it is very important
to be civil, respect each other to make all those types of virtual communities’
work. And that’s why now many policies exist to regulate this virtual life, to
not hurt anyone otherwise it can lead to “chaos”. People will take advantages
of their screen to let bad comments or to share their extremist opinions.
