W6. How important is it to be civil online on the Internet? - Yeonju Heo
The Internet has now surpassed a simple virtual space. People interact and create something through the Internet. It may be a simple discussion, or it may provide a starting point to help change society. In this sense, the Internet is another society, and people become citizens of society.
It is important to be civil online on the internet. People can freely express their opinions on the Internet. It is difficult to share opinions with many people in the real world. It is difficult to collect many people in one place, and it is difficult to hear all of them. But on the Internet, many people can freely express their opinions especially in the political arena. The Internet is the best place to express political intentions, although there are examples of abuse by its anonymity. Through this, we can make the government fulfill its role. Recently, collecting opinions of the people through the 'The public Petition Bulletin Board' has been receiving attention. From the request to help the weak, to the petition to punish corrupt corporations, various issues are posted on the ‘The public Petition Bulletin Board'. If the petition exceeds a certain number, it actually goes into the review and plays a very important role. In this way, citizen's activities on the Internet are in harmony with the actual citizens' activities. So it is very important.
And I also think it is more important for us to become a good civil online on the internet. Anyone on the Internet can become a citizen. But there are also wrong citizens. When the election day, they carry out manipulated information and put a fight on people. They mess up the Internet society. So how can we become a good citizen? What is a good citizen's standard? How can we make good civil online on internet? I would like to discuss it together.
I think that to be civil online is not only about expressing his political opinions. But, for me, it is also about the manner to talk online and to be polite and respectful with everybody, which must also exists in political debates.
