W6. How important is it to be civil online on the Internet? - Sojeong Choi
Online is the same as the offline community in which we live. We can make discussions in online and the discussion also influences other people. And there are many people who have sound discussions, but some people don't understand others.
When I first stated computer as a child, I often heard that "manners are important on the Internet". I think it's important to understand the difference with some people in internet. This attitude is also important in producing "collective intelligence".
Today I want to share this idea. For example, there is 'user' who read the posting and write a comment. The user can criticize about posting and appeal to own ideas within "netiquette.". Today I want to say that manners of 'creator' are also important. 'Freedom of expression' should be guaranteed, but creator have to think about how creations will affect the users.
Recently, there is issue that Youtube is having a negative impact on children. The harmful videos are posted without filtering and it's exposed naturally to children. Children who have seen the videos have sexual harassment and impulsive behavior for friend and adults. In other words, it's important to emphasize the importance of manners not only to the 'user' but also to the 'creator' in the internet participation.
What is the proper line if we set a limit to posting on the internet? If this violates 'freedom of expression', how can we lumber about harmful postings?

ReplyDeleteI absolutely agree with your care of 'freedom of expression'. There are some people who think they have a right to talk without any thought. When I met these people on the internet, especially NAVER comment sections, I hope NAVER block and pause these person's activity. Do you think you still have to be civil and kind to these people who attack you without any reason?
