W5. Can we trust wikipedia?- Tae Joon Yoo

Wikipedia is an online encyclopedia made by open editing and the participation of Web users. As a result of voluntary participation, more than 4 million categories have been created and articles continue to be posted and revised. As such, the very nature of Web users modifying and posting information directly raises questions about Wikipedia's reliability. I think tis is usual that such questions can be raised. But I think Wikipedia's reliability is higher than anything else. Nupedia was controlled from the center and created by dictionary makers, but it was unsuccessful. Rather, I think the platforms, like Wikipedia, are more reliable when they are open and open for anyone to participate. Anyone can freely practice the sharing of knowledge by voluntarily participating in it. A number of discussions and exchanges of opinions on a topic provide accurate information about knowledge. Now I am making Wikipedia articles for this semester, so if other users read my article and make any suggestions, they will be able to have discussions about it and will be able to update the information through these exchanges. In other words, the openness of Wikipedia and its character as a platform for anyone to participate in are thought to have helped it perform its role as an encyclopedia. I think that quantity and quality have both become great encyclopedia. In this sense, it has surpassed the Britannica Dictionary in that it reflects the latest trends and is more accurate than the one produced in the centrally-controlled top-down communication style. But interestingly, I think we should look at how many people are modifying the Wikipedia article. It is necessary to find out how many of the revised and new articles are written by new subscribers. That is because under the Pareto principle, the user who always writes new articles may modify and write all articles. I think it is necessary to consider these points. If the Pareto law makes it a rule for the minority to write most of Wikipedia's articles, it could eventually cause problems with its credibility.
