W3. Why do you think people use Wikipedia? Why do others write for it? - Geonju Lee

1.     Summary

Wikipedia, a type of collective intelligence, is also emerging rapidly as the era of the Internet 2.0 begins. In the old days, we lived in an environment where we could only passively accept information and not share information, talk, or show it. But now, Internet 2.0 has an Internet environment where I can share information with each other and add and modify information myself. As these circumstances are created, we can say people have a growing desire to be " cultural creators. " This change is directly related to the reason why people use Wikipedia.

2.     Interesting point

The cultural creators are who share and recreate a particular culture with people of similar interests in modern society. This ' culture creation ' activity is especially active as the Internet becomes more accessible to various people. For example, these days, a " handwritten relay " is in fashion, taking pictures of the hand writing for the " Me Too Campaign " written directly on paper. Nobody was pushing it, so it is the result of the "cultural creation" created by the cultural creators. Wikipedia is also similar in this context. Many people are gathered in Wikipedia to share intelligence and information. This is  just a cultural creation. In other words, people use Wikipedia to gain some information, and they are members adapting to changing modern culture by participating in creating a culture.

3.     Discussion point

Wikipedia, which is being revised daily by cultural creators, has something to worry about. Since it is a culture that is being spontaneously created without control of someone, false information can be spread indiscriminately. There is also the possibility that no matter how far you write the objective facts on Wikipedia, you will still be able to deduce a particular opinion from the tone of your voice. No matter how many sources and references you reveal, people can easily lose faith in Wikipedia. So, which should be the first priority of improving people's consciousness or regulating information in order to establish a proper collective intelligence culture?
