W3. Why do you think people use Wikipedia? Why do others write for it? -Yeonju Heo

Before I thought about why people use Wikipedia, I thought about why I used Wikipedia. Before I thought about why people use Wikipedia, I thought about why I used Wikipedia. When I search for the information I want, various sites come out. Before I knew Wikipedia, I had to access multiple sites to gather information. However, after learning about Wikipedia, I usually use Wikipedia. This is because Wikipedia gathers information that came from the site I visited. I don’t have to go to multiple sites, I can see everything on Wikipedia and can go to the source to see more details. So, first reason, people use Wikipedia to see a lot of information at once, like my experience. Second, it is reliable. Many people are not only information producers, but also monitoring Wikipedia. If there is something wrong, people give feedback right away. I think that it can improve the reliability of information of Wikipedia. Lastly, it is more accessible. When I search for information on Google, Wikipedia is at the top. I searched for 'Erving Goffman' in Korean and English, Wikipedia was the first of both. I think it is one of the reasons why people use Wikipedia so much.

So why do people write on Wikipedia? When I first saw Wikipedia, it was amazing that many people were willing to write and edit without financial compensation. Although it started as an assignment, I felt proud when I filled in the article while editing Wikipedia. If I were to write on Wikipedia after this class, being a part of the collective intelligence and being of help to someone would be my most motivation. I think a lot of people are writing to Wikipedia for this reason.

But in Korea, Wikipedia has weak influence. In the case of Korea, the site that has a question and answer format is active. Google has good access to Wikipedia but Koreans tend to use other sites more than Google. There is also a risk that reliability is lowered because there are fewer users and active monitoring and correction is not done. I think that we should increase the trust and participation in Wikipedia to further to activate Wikipedia in Korea. I also wonder other people's opinions about this.
