W3 Why do you think people use Wikipedia? Why do others write for it?-Ji Young An

Before I use Wikipedia and heard how much people use Wikipedia, I didn't know that lots of people use Wikipedia. The reason is I didn't used Wikipedia before this class. So I couldn't know the usefulness of Wikipedia and a vast store of knowledge in Wikipedia. Also before I start to edit in Wikipedia, I couldn't understood why people write Wikipedia using their time and effort. And I didn't think that deeply. I just thought some people write the information.

But after I use Wikipedia and get to know Wikipedia, my thought has changed. I think the reason why people use Wikipedia is collectivity, diversity, and enormous quantity of information. Collectivity comes with Wikipedia all time. Because all people in the world who could access to Wikipedia could write information that they know. Also everyone could edit or change information through discussion. And I think diversity comes from collectivity. In Wikipedia there must be diverse thinking and knowledge because everyone could edit or write in Wikipedia. This means many people who have different values and experience different cultures could talk, understand, and discuss about the information. And I think, from collectivity and diversity, enormous quantity of information comes. So I think because of these advantages people use Wikipedia.

I also could understand why people write their information or knowledge in Wikipedia. As I experience editing in Wikipedia, it was really worthwhile. Also during editing information, I could think more deeply and be more careful of that information. Because of diversity of Wikipedia, my information should not be biased. So before I edit information I could think more about that information. And this process gives me a multilateral thinking about that information.

    Same with me. I was changed after using Wikipedia.
    Many people will see what we're done in Wikipedia so we have to write right things.
    It'll be very dangerous if we're not.

    I hope others also think like that ^^

    I agree with your opinion that enormous quantity of information comes from collectivity and diversity. That is why Wikipedia can possible. While I use Wikipedia, I surprised that many people are using and editing Wikipedia, the power of collective intelligence.

W5. Can we trust Wikipedia? Yun-Jin Kim

Then I want to ask. Can we trust News? I think Wikipedia is based on sources. Every time we edit on Wikipedia we need the sources. If we don’t put sources, the information we wrote would be deleted.   So I think asking ‘How can we trust Wikipedia’ is kind of similar to ‘How can we trust News’. I know there could be subjective opinion on Wikipedia. If the topic is unpopular, the public opinion doesn’t focus, there’s could be no feedback and that makes Wiki subjective. for this reason, we have to think before we choose the topic in Wiki. If the topic isn’t famous enough and have no sources, we should think this information isn’t sure enough. but if the topic has clear sources we can have a trust on that information. I think it is not important to ask, ‘is the Wikipedia trustful’. It is important to ask ‘is this information on Wikipedia has a exact source?’.

These days lots of controversial problems are rising. And because of those problems, people fight on the Internet. But I think most of problems happen because of a lack of civic attitudes. As I highlighted the discussion section of Wikipedia last post, talking together with having civic attitudes is very important point. On the Internet lots of people meet. And this means all of them has different thinking and experiences different cultures. So it is certain that everyone's opinion is different. But I think from this difference, the collective intelligence comes. So I think this difference is very important.
